Founded in the 1830's, Sausalito has had a rich and colorful history as a port of call, a fishing enclave, a major shipbuilding venue, and of course as the nearest neighbor to San Francisco for almost one hundred years. Originally named Rancho Saucelito, the city encompasses only 2.2 square miles with almost one half square mile remaining submerged underneath the waters of the harbor.
